Women In Business Introduction

Hello everyone! We wanted to kick off the Women in Business blog by first introducing ourselves and telling you more about what we do as a club. Women in Business is an organization that is dedicated to providing a safe space for women (and their allies) at the University of Alberta to learn valuable skills for their professional lives. We focus on connecting students with industry leaders in various fields through networking opportunities as well as educational seminars such as salary negotiation and how to effectively deliver presentations. Even though we are a relatively new club on campus, we are excited to create a community that encourages students to enhance their own abilities and strive to reach their full potential.

To start off, our club has 30 general members who all bring their own ideas and expertise to the table. While we will be introducing all of these inspirational individuals throughout the year, we’d like to start off by introducing our executive team:

Rachel Rochat - Co-Chair/VP External

Rachel is in her first year at the Alberta School of Business, however, she has attended two universities before finding a home at the U of A. She is a third-year finance major that found a passion in teamwork and comradery. Rachel was part of the JDC West Athletics team as well as a Cohort Rep for the Business Students’ Association. Rachel is passionate about allowing women to be privy to conversations they have not been privy to in the past. She is excited to cultivate and be a part of an incredibly strong pool of candidates heading into the professional world. As VP External, Rachel is excited to see the success of the inaugural year of Women In Business and is looking forward to seeing how it will evolve in the future.

Remington Irwin - Co-Chair/VP Internal

Remington is a people-loving SMO major who just finished her first year at the Alberta School of Business. She has absolutely loved her first year in the program, and is entranced with the phenomenal community that ASoB is home to. Throughout her first year, Remington has tried to get involved with the U of A, and in doing so really embraced her value of well-roundedness. She was a Cohort Rep for Cohort One, volunteered with Events Crew at the Students Union, and led classroom experiments with Science Fundamentals. Along with her school involvement, rock climbing is also a large part of Remington’s life, and she is now a competitor turned coach at the climbing gym on campus. If you’re looking for something fun and new to try, come say hello :) Remington is thrilled to be a part of this motivated team of women, who are all aiming to create change in their communities. She has so much belief behind what is possible for women and their allies to achieve, and is excited to see what this new group accomplishes! Remington is the Co-Chair and VP Internal for Women in Business, so she will be leading the club’s internal meetings, as well as communicating plenty with its members throughout the year. Her hopes are so high for the future of Women In Business.

Mya Dunn - VP Finance

Mya is going into her 5th year in Operations Management, with a minor in SMO. She's the VP Finance of WIB this year but her interests reach much farther than just numbers. She's passionate about helping others realize their strengths and capabilities, and is an advocate for the importance of practicing psychological safety in all areas of life. In her past terms with the BSA and as a BEA President, she's learned about the remarkable growth that she and others are capable of. The best parts of her ASoB experience have always revolved around the incredible people she's met along the way, and WIB is no exception. Mya joined the team this year because she believes wholeheartedly in the cause, and the group of women who lead it. She is in love with them all, and hopes you fall in love with them too.

Navya Baradi - VP Marketing

Navya just finished her first year at the Alberta School of Business and is (soon to be) a SMO major! She is very interested in the people side of business and loves the sense of community she experienced in her cohort, AIBC, and ASoB as a whole. Navya is excited to be on this team of women that is committed to supporting the diverse community in business both personally and professionally. She is a feminist-in-progress, always trying to challenge herself and what she believes in. In business and beyond, she is passionate about grass roots movements that provide people with equal opportunities for success. Navya is looking forward to building an inclusive space on campus that provides support to minorities through Women In Business. She is the VP Marketing and can’t wait to engage with you on the socials! (pls follow WIB :))

Sadhna Mathrani - VP Logistics

Sadhna is going into her fourth and final year at the Alberta School of Business. She is a Business Economics and Law major and minors in Political Science. Sadhna has been heavily involved in debate since she was in high school, and has travelled all over the world for various competitions. This past year, Sadhna was the Debate Captain for the Alberta JDC West team and formed the first all-girls debate team in the history of the competition. She is a strong feminist and is passionate about giving underrepresented groups a voice and the skills they need to succeed. As VP Logistics, she helps the VP Internal and External with various club activities and ensures that everything the club participates in aligns with its mandate. She is really excited to be part of the WIB Executive and looks forward to seeing what the next year brings the club!

Stay tuned for more information and interesting reads over the next few months! This month we will be focusing specifically on the current COVID-19 crisis and the impacts it has on women and business in general.
